It is apparent there was some kind of breakaway, for she attended university as a young adult. Avigail had developed a particular love for hydroponics and, at the suggestion of one of her most respected teachers, decided to go into the military rather than continue on with her plan to eventually obtain a doctorate. She was told the pay was very good for scientists and she would have opportunities to work on potentially secret projects that a PhD would not necessarily help her gain access to. Ever inquisitive, the young woman leapt on the chance and enrolled in Officer Candidate School. Her bright mind shone, but her lack of intensive social activity throughout her life finally caught up to her. The former might have had her advancing quickly yet again, but the latter held her back. She had to learn how to work with others without simply giving into their wishes, especially men, and was taught that it was alright to sometimes question authority in public, rather than waiting for a private opportunity that might never arrive or might be too late. After Officer Candidate School, she was assigned as one of several assistants to the man in charge of Hypothetical Hydroponic Studies. This included applying all she had learned at Technion to plant life discovered on other planets as well as a heavy emphasis on breeding and morphing current plants to be able to survive (and perhaps thrive) in alien conditions for potential military assignments. When her supervisor realized what a bright and likeable woman he had in his retenue, he took it upon himself to teach her a bit more about the practicalities of leadership. It was a slow change over the course of a couple of years, but Avigail blossomed into a competent leader whom the other assistants went to as a go-between for any issues they felt the director should know. She was not particularly dynamic, but she was warm, steady, and nonjudgmental, always encouraging innovation in the others. Eventually, the director used his connections and her history of success in mutating plants to get her a position on the EAV Genesis as a Hydroponics Technician.

Background

Avigail Rivka Cohen was born third in a family of what ended up totalling 9 children by the time she reached adulthood — there may well be more now. Her family was hareidi, the extreme religious branch of Judaism in Israel that even other Torah-observant groups shy away from. She was always prone to asking questions about everything from the nature of G-d to the whys and hows of decomposition. She always aced her classes in the all-girls schools she attended and had a heart for giving. However, she drove her parents and teachers up the wall with her inquisitive nature. Their lack of answers, whether due to availability or the adults simply getting fed up, bothered her greatly and drove her to seek her own answers through observation and "sidewalk" experimentation. Plants fascinated her more than anything else.

Avigail's quest to know everything about everything only intensified as she grew into her teens. It also became more focused upon both Judaism and botany. Her refusal to let questions go unanswered led to her becoming a social outcast among her peers. They were busy preparing themselves for marriage and were happy to accept any platitudes offered in response to apparent conflicts in the world or their beliefs. She was often warned that her current path would lead to her being an old spinster and that she had to grow out of her phase. Her parents loved her, but had no idea how to relate to her. Still, she clung to her beliefs while branching out her knowledge. This combination prevented her from ending up like some other girls who simply run away from anything related to their religion as well as authority. The result is that she spent these years mostly alone. However, she learned to rely on her wits and become creative to find the answers she so desperately wanted.

As soon as she reached the age of majority, Avigail came to the painful decision to leave her old life behind and go to university, something positively scandalous in her little community. Although she said she would keep in touch with her family, the hectic pace at Technion University was simply too much for her to keep her word often. She showed up to a few of her siblings' weddings or their children's brisim milim (circumcisions), but the emotional distance was apparent. Eventually, she simply stopped trying. Meanwhile, she devoted herself entirely to her studies, passionately researching and absorbing information at an incredible rate. With a pointed lack of social life, she took on extra classes and finished college in three years, rather than the standard four.

*Episode 2-2: Official Landing Party	August 01, 2011	March 09, 2128	A science team and support unit of Marines arrives on the planet and establishes a foothold. Due to strict safety protocols, quarantine procedures are engaged, making this a temporary one-way trip for those who venture down to the surface.
