Service Record Laurel Yin Qingyu was born on 8 January 2093 in Pensacola, Florida. The only child of an American schoolteacher and a Chinese fighter pilot deployed to the United States as part of a military exchange program, the young girl moved to Harbin before the outbreak of hostilities some three years later. Following the example of her father, who was killed during the last months of the war, Qingyu enlisted in the People's Liberation Army when she turned eighteen. She was deployed to Jiangsu Province with the 116th Mechanized Infantry Division and tasked with providing aid and enforcing order along the stricken Chinese coast. But when it came time to renew her five-year contract in 2117, she abruptly resigned and immigrated to San Francisco with her mother instead.

Laurel joined up with the Earth Alliance late that year and was placed in A-school with the expectation that she’d take advanced English classes on the side. Upon her graduation, she was designated a petty officer third class and, in light of her experience with the PLA, given the rating of Intelligence Specialist. She participated in her first official action in 2119 when deployed aboard the cruiser EAV Vigilant, the flagship of a small battlegroup ordered to seize and defend the Gulf of Aden. It didn’t take her long to learn the tricks of her trade, and her career in the Navy seemed assured — until she ended up assigned to the Genesis crew in 2122.

Possessed of a keen tactical mind, Yin's main job is to analyze information concerning the identification, disposition, personalities, combat efficiency, and histories of friendly and enemy forces. She then helps Command develop vulnerability studies for use in predicting and countering probable enemy courses of action. Having received cross-training in cryptography and the operation of Genesis' electronic warfare suites, she can take over communications duties in a pinch, and her time in the mechanized infantry prevents her from being too much of a liability on any away missions to which she might be attached.

Yin enjoys Chinese chess, karaoke, torrid romance novels, and bok choi.
